Survey: Arizonans Willing to Pay More for Renewable Energy
A recent survey found that Arizonans view renewable energy sources like solar and wind power far more favorably than coal and - most notably - are willing to pay more to transition the state to these types of energy sources.
The survey of 600 registered Arizona voters was conducted by Public Opinion Strategies (POS) and Fairbank, Maslin, Maullin, Metz & Associates (FM3) in February. In the findings report, "Key Findings from a Survey of Arizona Voters Regarding Increasing the Use of Renewable Sources for Electricity Production" POS and FM3 report that "Taken together, the results show a strong voter preference for transitioning away from coal and increasing the use of clean, renewable energy to meet Arizona's future electricity needs."
Highlights from the survey:
"Arizona voters differentiate between energy sources, holding very positive impressions of solar, wind and hydroelectric power, in particular."
Arizonans reject the idea that renewable energy sources are too unreliable.73% disagree (48% strongly) with the view that "renewable energy like wind and solar power is too unreliable to be a significant part of our energy supply."
Arizonans think we should replace coal with renewable energy sources.79% of voters agree (61% strongly) with the statement that "we should start replacing coal with other energy sources like wind and solar power."
"Voters strongly prefer an investment in more renewable energy, rather than in pollution-control technology to help coal-burning power plants meet updated air quality standards."Given a choice between investing in pollution-control technologies for coal-fired plants and transitioning to non-polluting sources of electricity, Arizonans overwhelmingly prefer renewable energy (71% to 19%).
Arizonans say more affordable electricity is not worth more pollution."87% of Arizonans say that ‘having energy that is affordable' is very important to them personally. At the same time, 63% agree with a statement saying that ‘having more affordable electricity is not worth the pollution caused by coal burning power.'"
Arizonans say they are willing to pay more to increase the amount of energy we get from renewable sources.When given a range of amounts from 50 cents to $15, 56% of Arizonans said they were willing to pay $10 more per month to get more energy from renewable sources.
"Arizona voters view a shift to renewable energy and away from coal as a job creator for the state's economy." 54% say that ‘if Arizona did invest more in renewable energy and move away from coal-burning power' it will ‘create new jobs' in the state.Just 12% say it would reduce the number of jobs.
I have long argued that the benefits of transitioning to renewable energy sources like solar and wind outweigh the costs of doing so - in part because they are less polluting and in part because they're not finite.But the opinions of Arizona voters in aggregate matter much more than mine - so it's great to see that Arizonans in general feel the same way I do.
Because the fact is that increasing the percentage of renewable energy sources in our portfolio does cost money - as do energy efficiency upgrades (in upfront costs, anyway).But with renewables we minimize or eliminate the negative externalities (i.e. pollution), which really represent huge hidden costs.And in increasing our energy efficiency, we reduce overall energy expenditures over the long run.
And, I do believe that the renewable energy sector - solar, especially - has the potential to be a jobs- and wealth-creator in the state.But that benefit won't automatically accrue to us; outside of their construction, solar power plants don't employ a huge number of people.To really reap the benefits of a renewable energy sector in Arizona, we'll have to do the R&D and manufacture the components here, too.
