Salt River Project GM Richard Silverman Stepping Down
Salt River Project General Manager Richard Silverman will step down from his position in August, bringing to an end his 45-year career with the utility. Silverman, 70, who has been general manager since 1994, told the SRP board his decision at a meeting Monday. He cited the growing economy and SRP’s status in terms of water and power resources as reasons to step down now. “The reservoirs are full and our work force is well prepared for the challenges ahead,” Silverman said in a statement. “With a slow but sure economic recovery expected, I believe it’s an appropriate time to start transitioning to a new management team.”
The SRP board has hired a consultant to assist in selecting Silverman’s successor, who will be announced later this year. SRP officials said they expect to have a successor named prior to August and there are a number of people within the utility who will be considered as well as those from outside the company. The board would be responsible for naming the successor.
Silverman joined SRP in 1966 as an attorney and served in a number of positions before being named general manager. He has been active in the community, serving as chairman on board including the Arizona Community Foundation, Greater Phoenix Leadership, Barrow Foundation, St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center board, and the Heard Museum. Silverman said he intends to remain active in the community after his retirement.
He also has been involved in national groups affecting the utility industry, including the Electric Power Research Institute board and the Large Public Power Council.
SRP President David Rousseau said Silverman will be remembered for his work with SRP as well as his roll in the community.
In a statement, board member Carl Weiler said the utility is well positioned for Silverman’s retirement in terms of having management abilities in house.
“Fortunately, we have a deep bench of top talent in SRP’s senior management,” he said. “Each brings broad experience and a unique skill set, however, Dick’s decision provides an opportunity for the Board to assure our customers and shareholders that the next general manager has the expertise and experience to carry on SRP’s well-earned reputation for superior service and reliable water and energy.” ..
