UniSource reported fourth-quarter net income of $11.1 million, or 29 cents per share, compared with earnings of $10.4 million, or 28 cents per share, in fourth-quarter 2009. Analysts had expected quarterly earnings of 28 cents per share, on average. For all of 2010, the company posted net income of $111.5 million, or $2.82 per share, compared with $104.3 million, or $2.69 per share, in 2009. The company had forecast 2010 earnings between $2.75 and $3 per share. Analysts had estimated annual earnings of $2.92 per share. Retail power sales fell for third straight year at TEP, UniSource’s biggest subsidiary, but careful cost controls and efficiency improvements have helped buoy the company’s bottom line, UniSource Chairman and CEO Paul Bonavia said in prepared remarks. TEP’s 2010 retail sales by kilowatt-hour fell 0.8 percent from 2009. Although the weather in TEP’s service area was hotter than normal, there were 3.5 percent fewer cooling degree days — a measure of power demand for cooling — than in 2009, the company said. Higher wholesale power sales and other revenues helped boost UniSource’s fourth-quarter operating revenues 7.9 percent, to $359 million. Operating revenues for all of 2010 rose 4.1 percent, to $1.45 billion. Sales to TEP’s mining customers were strong, increasing 1.4 percent last year compared with 2009, the company said, noting that mining activity in TEP’s service area continues to increase as the price of copper remains high. But lingering economic weakness and state-mandated programs to boost energy efficiency may offset any growth in sales to residential and business customers, Bonavia said. UniSource estimated its earnings for 2011 in the range of $2.60 to $2.90 per share. “If sales at TEP remain near current levels, the higher costs of necessary maintenance activity, combined with an increase in depreciation and interest expense, will put pressure on our earnings,” Bonavia said. TEP’s non-fuel base rates cannot be increased before 2013. Bonavia noted, though, that the company’s cash flows are expected to remain strong, with $350 million forecast for 2011. UniSource’s board declared a first quarter dividend for common shareholders of 42 cents per share. The dividend will be paid on March 23 to common shareholders of record as of March 11. In 2010, the company’s quarterly dividend was 39 cents per share. UniSource shares were up 51 cents, or about 1.5 percent, at $36.42 in mid-afternoon trading on the New York Stock Exchange.
